Apple caps iPod volumes

A software update for the iPod gives users greater control over maximum volume settings for Apple's portable music player. The move follows concerns being raised - by the RNID among others - about the threat of permanent hearing damage.
Indeed, Apple has been sued over this issue by a Louisiana man. Note that in Europe, iPod volume is restricted by EU regulations.
The new feature has been designed for parents to control volume levels on behalf of their children, using a combination code to enforce the limits. If a user attempts to turn the volume all the way up after a limit has been set, a lock icon will appear in the Now Playing screen, on the right end of the volume bar.
The free upgrade can be found on the Apple Web site at http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/. The new 1.1.1 software update is for the iPod nano and Fifth Generation iPod.
